I have consulted with scores of businesses and organizations since starting Gray Matter Partners in 1976. Our involvement covers the entire range of business process; from idea generation, to incubation, to planning through execution and renewal. This includes all phases of business encompassing marketing, finance, acquisition and divestiture.
I have a special interest in management and ownership transitions; especially in family controlled corporations. I have assisted in private companies going public and public companies pulling back to private. This has included product and service enterprises.
My professional career has been blended with the development, healthy functioning and expansion of schools, health care businesses, and other organizations. I continue to be as intrigued and captivated with the range of what it takes to make a singular business work to all of commerce succeed as I am with what it takes to make the individual human, families, and all levels of community succeed. I have been fully round the circle of ‘social and behavioral science meets the business world.’
I have participated in a variety of rapidly changing regulatory and competitive environments to refine focus and direction; including state licensing, national certifications; and FDA approvals for implantable medical devoices.
These involvements have included the entire range from the largest, oldest corporations in the country; to simple 'ma and pa' start-ups; profit and non-profit companies; public and private groups; some with extensive long-term funding and other with less than survival budgets. I know how to work within other’s vision statements and balance sheets as well as succeeding, and failing, at a few endeavors of my own.
I have taught management by objectives (MBO), negotiation, critical path and business skills too numerous to list as well as instituted several where I was employed or contracted. I have used and taught the 6-Sigma framework for reporting and acquisition of resources and worked toward ‘Black Belt’ certification. I am familiar with the RFI, RFQ, and RFP processes from both sides of the table. I have experience in criterion development for when to outsource or stay in-house with staff, processes and project pieces.
It is no accident that virtually all of my positions have required the active questioning of ‘What specifically are we preparing our selves, our staff and our children for;’ and, ‘How to most effectively and efficiently go about doing this?’ I have used a continuum of metrics to help in the selection, procuring, improvement and preservation of the most desirable human talent for the needs at hand. More importantly, I have the discussion skills necessary to perform this function with candidates when a clear and concise ‘description’ of what is needed is not so plausible.
My greatest passion started as and will likely always remain the pragmatics of teaching and learning. I have worked in the capacity of school psychologist and, recently, K-12 substitute teacher. I was an advisory board member of Minnesota Association for Children and Adults with Learning Disabilities (MACALD), interim president of Montessori School Wayzata Bay, and taught full term courses for Joliet School of Nursing BS and MS programs on Educating Special and Gifted Children; among other more traditional psychology courses.
