Biofeedback training teaches you to Notice and then Change your biology functions; on purpose.
Biofeedback equipment does not do anything to you; they are not machines that do ‘work’on you, to you. Biofeedback instruments precisely measure what your biology is right now already doing at a point in time. The instrument detects tiny changes in what your body parts are doing. They measure these changes each second or several times each second. The changing is well below a point we would normally be able to sense or 'feel' them.
These tiny changes are amplified by a computer and displayed back to you in sounds changing and/or visually, usually a moving wave signal, on a screen. The instrument is feeding back to you what your biology is doing; therefore the name; bio-feedback.
Various biofeedback instruments measure skin temperature, muscle tension, heart rate, blood pressure, breathing (rate volume and patterns), skin conductance and even specific brain wave patterns.
The purpose of many treatments; including drug therapy, physical therapy, psychotherapy and surgery is to influance and make tiny changes in our biology. At times biofeedback is used to treat a problem directly; such as blood pressure with migraine, muscle tension with body pain or breathing with asthma.
Other times biofeedback is used to calm the muscles, or mind in general to encourage the natural processes in repair and rehabilitation to happen faster; such as after surgery or childbirth. Still other times biofeedback is used to prepare tissues for re-normalized use; such as after brain injury. It is frequently used for performance enhancement in Olympic and Professional athletics.
Biofeedback training does not just to provide you with better regulation abilities while using the equipment. Once the abilities are learned, the changes can continue in your own home and often improve without using the equipment anymore. This is your mind helping your body ... help your mind ... help your body. This is your mind and body working together.
Treatment efficacy is rated on a scale of 1 - 5 with 5 being the best. All disorders listed have been rated as having at least level 3 evidence supporting their efficacy. *
